Well there is no question that the movie has its faults but to rob the movie and its actors of their well deserved praise because of them is certainly absurd. The acting is just what its supposed to be : real. I have rarely seen an on screen couple seem so natural. True the story doesn't have a good ending, but does it have to? This movie is nothing more than the depiction of an average class american couple going through their falling in love and out of it. It's certainly not a feel good movie but nonetheless a movie that was made with the purpose of conveying a sense of reality into the classical romantic movie. I suspect this is why Ryan Gosling decided to make this movie, as a sort of counterpart to the classical fairy tale "Notebook" type romance.

"I suspect this is why Ryan Gosling decided to make this movie, as a sort of counterpart to the classical fairy tale "Notebook" type romance." It's not my opinion; I suspect Gosling thoroughly enjoyed the Notebook, he started a relationship with Rachel McAdams during the filming of this movie, and it lasted 4 years. People want to see romance and happiness in a realistic movie; it brings hope and uplifts them. They see enough of the real thing/reality in real life.
