Dune the epic novel written by Frank Herbert becomes a huge mess under the direction of David Lynch. If you hadn't read the book you wouldn't have much of a clue as to what was taking place because it is never really explained in any satisfying detail. Huge tracts of the original story are altered for cinematic license making this version of Dune a convoluted mess. A couple of years after this movie came out a re-edited version came out with Alan Smithee as director and David Lynch's name removed from the production. This version was much better because a detailed narration at the beginning of the film gives a good overview of things to come in the film giving us a better understanding and a place to begin. Kyle MacLachlan's first film role, plays the young protaganist, Paul Atraides. If you have a chance seek out the re-edited version. Although this first version has its moments there is nothing really epic about it. Read the book if you can because it's way more detailed and satisfying.
