Great job by Spielberg! Excellent plot development. Great performances by Colin Ferrell and Samantha Morton. Tom Cruise? Another ho-hum acting job. Spielberg should have gotten someone else. Finally I like what this movie has to say. The moral. Nothing is perfect. There are no shortcuts in life. Shortcuts can lead to ways to abuse the system. And, no matter what the ends, they don’t justify the means. In the movie there is the willingness to lock up potential killers, whom might be innocent, to live in a murder free life. No murders sounds OK until you realize that many of those convicts are really normal people and are now as good as dead. It reminds me of how post 9/11 we look for short cuts and the willingness to cut human rights for the overall good. Not only will they not help, they are errors that can be left for other to abuse. On the flips side, I have to deduct mérits for the following. I notice several attempts at humour fall flat. One or two laughs only, with a dozen or so attempts. They tried too hard at that. Then the schizophrenic fashion and technology. Many movies have trouble with this, but this was particularly bad. It is 55 years in the future. Some things have evolved 200 years, while other things are exactly the same as today. For example, 50 years from now, and 3D hologram advertising pop up identify you by name through a retina scan, while GAP sells Jean Jackets? Well maybe? The GAP sucks. But anyway? What do we wear from 50 years ago? Oh, yeah, Jean jackets. So change that, what do we wear from 100 years ago? There were also some flaws in the script. It was too easy for Cruise to drive out of the car factory. As in it looked like any car thief would make a fortune. Then, a convicted criminal is locked away and still has computer authorization and access within the same building? Those dumb cops would deserve to loose..
