    The Silver Linings Playbook

The secret about The Silver Linings Playbook is the directing. None of the actors dominates the ensemble energy. The moment when Cooper and De Niro first interact is a prime example. The son released from eight months in a psychiatric care facility greets his father with a small sound in the sons's throat. The entire script of life long struggle and failure to connect is played out in that moment without words. The message of how relationships can heal even though the people themselves are not perfect, is told with a masterful hand. The camera work is not invasive or calling attention to itself. Each character has dimension and depth. The courage of allowing the silence between people to do the speaking, is evidenced in the director's hand. The first moment Lawrence's character meets Cooper's character the power of the bonding is stated. Cooper's eyes go to her breasts, her eyes and her wedding ring and he is in her spell. The wit and wisdom is not found in a witty, high intensity language, an over the top technical support, or in a particular performance. The ensemble cast, the restrained directorial hand allow the beauty of these characters to shine through.
