Well melancholia is a sort of double edge sword. On the one hand it's a gem of a movie and an example of actors working at the very peak of the craft. On the other hand it's an utterly depressing 2hr movie that most people would have a hard time going through once, let alone twice. So where does this stand? It is certainly one of the very best art flicks depicting depression seen in the two central characters (Justine and Claire) Kirsten Dunst is absolutely phenomenal leaving nothing out and putting it all out in the open. The very first few minutes are pretty much a summation of the entire 2hr with the picture of Kirsten Dunst looking more and more depressed in her expression and the planet "melancholia" approaching the earth. Those are the two central themes of the movie. I'll leave it up to each viewer to evaluate the effectiveness of these metaphors. Regardless, it's hard to criticize a movie so beautifully done in every which way. I guess the only viewers who would not find their way to it are those seeking solely entertainment out of it. As an entertainment value there certainly are better choices.

You don't go to see a movie called "Melancholia" and expect an uplifting story :) I think Trier is at the top of his art on this one. For the rest, again, you are dead on with your critic, but movies don't have to be entertaining, they can be essais and experiments in a genre or the medium itself. I've looked through your impressive number of critic and found out that you are very often dead on... as far as I'm concerned.
