    Batman Begins

Ok I saw this film thanks to the folks at cinemamontreal. Com. ! Like Mr. OcularStorm, I felt that the batman begins movie was a great improvement over past comic book movie flicks. It attempted to show substance and depth to the characters and to the story, something tragically missed in other comic book turned movies. The greatest improvement to me was in the acting. Christian Bale, which I knew from the Machinist, did an extraordinary job as Batman. The best batman by far in ages!!! Ok, now let me speak clearly folks, I loved Michael Keaton as Batman but here we are introduced to Batman in his youth/beginnings, Christopher Bale seems like he did a "perfect" job. In addition, this movie proves to me that no one else should be cast for the role and that Christopher Bale should be the man to take the Batman franchise through the next decade. After a decade or more of bad batman movies (aka Clooney and Kilmer), Christopher Bale comes as a refreshing but anticipated surprise. Now, like mentionned by Mr OcularStorm, the movie oddly borrows in style from Alien and The Last Samurai but still maintains a sort of equilibrium which is masterfully directed by Christopher Nolan. Another interesting choice was that of Christopher Nolan as the director. If you have seen the incredible movie that is Memento than you are familiar with his work. Oddly enough, Memento never made it to the hollywood hotshot list but became a force of its own when word to mouth made it a huge success albeit not at the box-office. To sum it up, I am a huge movie fan but a slightly more-than-average male batman fan. I found this movie to be much more worthwhile than most of the summer hollywood blockbusters that have been comming out for the past couple of years. My sister, just like me, found that the movie dragged on at times but it redeemed itself in my view when the action hit. The character played out by Liam Neelson is simply the unexpected villain. You could have not seen him comming a mile away. The villain who actually thinks of himself as the good guy kinda doesn't make it click for me. I mean who could possibly think that destroying civilization over and over again would be constructive to the evolution of human kind and to making a better world. It is strangely reminiscent of the Matrix sequels where the machines have destroyed the city over and over again. Regardless, Liam plays a convincing role as a martial arts villain, quite a far way from his last role in Kinsey and a real tribute to him as an actor. It is strange that such a powerfull actor Gary Oldman be given and accept a role such as the uncorrupted police officer. It is obvious here that Gary Oldman could have passed on this small role but he didn't, and the essence of this movie thanks him for that. He projects that innocence that one would not have expected of him. Now, lets go to Katie... Katie Katie Katie... Well she's dating Tom Cruise and is a Mrs of the Moment of sorts... but can she act? Can she pull it off in her first starring role in a big hollywood production? No. I saw pieces of april and felt like she was so much more in her "domain " there than in this movie. Ok, the slapping of the face was fairly authentic and did awake certain emotions of integrity, values, etc... but altogether I couldn't feel her as an actress like I did almost every other character in the movie... (even the strangely deranged psychiatrist was extremely well played out) She feels like she's acting. I don't think she has what it takes to be in the big leagues. Now, that being said a number of actresses can make it in the big leagues without being of the gifted Meryl Streeps type. All they need is to pull on a few key strings here and there and Katie seems to be doing that because she seems like the weakest link in this film. My intuition tells me that despite that she will have a fairly glamourous career because she can play the hollywood game exceptionally well. I would definitely recommend this movie to any action-hero fan out there. It is different, action- packed, and brings in elements of originality that are refreshing for the viewer. The script is extremely good and its only weaknesses are the lagging of the story at times and Katie Holmes. Loved it and would see it again although I'd know when to plan my little trips to the food counter!
