A showcase vehicle for Daniel Day-Lewis, who treats us to his amazing power, range, and characterization. The pace is slow, and the film is long, but you stay awake, not least due to the highly frenetic and jarring soundtrack (I actually won a copy of the soundtrack at the premier, and no, I'm never going to listen to it) The characters were all interesting, but pretty unlikable. The biggest flaw is that there was no real character development - they're portrayed well, but no one changes in any perceptible way over the 30 year plus span of the film.
