    Florence Foster Jenkins

I have known of Florence Foster Jenkins since I was a teen and have a great many of her early recordings on CD, sadly, all too unbelievable for words. This period piece is nothing new to me as I've read almost every thing possible on this formidable woman. When I heard they were filming her life with Meryl Streep, I was ecstatic. I knew Meryl would bring an authenticity to the role much like she did in playing Julia Child a few years back. We have a great screenplay based on a very non-conventional life so expect humanity not action. It's wonderful to see a feature about real people without relying on the film trickery of today. Meryl is magnificent and inspirational as Miss Foster Jenkins, so into character as usual. I see another Oscar Nomination looming on the horizon. Great choice in casting Hugh Grant as her protective husband much as in casting Stanley Tucci as the perfect husband of Julia Child in J & J a few years back.

Being a total operaphile, this film gave me such great pleasure, a pure joy mixed with a tinge of some sadness and a tear. The music Florence tries to sing are not only melodies that have survived time but the greatest of arias from grand opera I love so well. This said, what can one conjure of a woman with a passion that defies all else in her life. She knows the music in her head, but it comes out of the vocal chords almost as a joke. The movie gives us a period piece with decor and costume in which we can relish. The whole notion of being part of the Carnegie Hall experience sucked me in big time as I've been in that venerable hall many times indeed. Someone on this thread said to wait for the film on DVD. Boo to that! Boo, again and again! What a stupid suggestion probably from a person who knows nothing of true passion, of classical music, not to mention the heartache of human limitations. And finally the rapture of once again witnessing the art of acting on the big screen, magnificent roles both large and small.

Loved your honest heartfelt review... Plan to see this soon. I remember my parents talking about her in glowing terms when I was growing up.
