La Grande Illusion is easily one of my top 10 French films of all time. Jean Renoir, son of Impressioniste painter Renoir has made so many outstanding films with Grand Illusion at the very top of my list. We are in the throws of WW I, an anti-war film much like the earlier Oscar winner ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. There is much in the way of history to be absorbed as seen in the early part of the 20th century. Jean Gabin and Erich Von Stroheim are only two of the superlative actors to grace this film of great beauty. Grande Illusion is made with immense love and shot so as to serve as a remarkable example in film auteur-ship, well before that term was coined.
