    The Calling

This film was particularly interesting to me as I have a friend who did exactly as Joanna in this film and joined, not the Benedictines, as in this case, but The Sisters of Saint Joseph. I related to all the bizarre behaviour of the nuns having been taught by nuns and knowing their unpredictable personalities. In other words, the whole thing rang true for me. One encounters some bizarre and comical moments in a nunnery and in dealing with nuns themselves. Add to this that we have an impeccable cast of great actresses in the role of nuns and the premise becomes all the more plausible. This must have been one of Susannah York's last films. The film tries to state succinctly that if one has a true vocation almost nothing can deter you from your true course in life.
