Biographies or based-on-true-story movies are always a notch more interesting to me than other movies because of the actual events anchored into them. This one is no exception. Solomon Northup's journey is almost unbearable to watch. Feeble hearts beware. This movie is not only exploring the physical side of slavery, which is really graphic, but the emotional and psychological manipulation that was used to keep black people in line and afraid of their keepers. Great rendering of the Northrup’s character by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Supporting actors like Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson and Paul Giamatti are also good though their roles don’t have the same exposure as Michael Fassbender’s who, in his incarnation of the second slave master and ultimate bad guy, is notably rising from the pack.
