    Chimes at Midnight

Did Shakespeare have Orson Welles in mind when he created the rotund, verbose, witty, amourous character of Falstaff? Welles took excerpts from the Bard's plays of Henry IV, added some twists, and came up with what might be his greatest creation 25 years after Citizen Kane. All dialogue is spoken in Shakespearean prose including Welles' written contributions. Filmed in Spain in B&W and recently restored, 'Chimes at Midnight' has a battle scene that is as action-oriented as any CG movie currently on-screen, and watching it in a darkened theatre almost feels like a guilty pleasure.
