If the English word 'wonderful' is meant to represent the phrase 'full of wonder', then this film is wonderful. Sorrentino's characters are mostly 'wanna-be' successes in various high art fields. They were either one-shot wonders, continually repeated mediocre efforts, or were ignored or bypassed completely while still waiting for their chance. People on the fringes of success seldom give up their desires until much later in life, enjoying the position and accolades they have received without advancing to the next or any other higher level. Thus they and we continue to fool ourselves. Sorrentino gives us the beautiful architecture of Rome, marvelous interiors, passionate music of both current and earlier pieces, beautiful people playing out their fantasies, and a protagonist who has been in his role for so long now he seems to have been born for it. This is a movie to take you out of your own life. You may or may not be glad to get back.
