Peter Bogdanovich, now 72, was present at this screening of a coming-of-age film that exposes a small community's sparse citizenry to conflicts and problems that could exist anywhere. Bogdanovich and author Larry McMurtry have created a gritty overview of a human being's needs, and those needs are narrow and frighteningly simple. Jeff Bridges, a fresh-faced 21-year-old, was nominated for an Oscar for this film, but had to wait until he was 60 before winning one. The beautiful Cybill Shepherd, two months younger than Bridges, made her first on-screen appearance here, then hooked up with director Bogdanovich for the next nine years.
