    The Revenant

NOT a date movie. Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has presented us with an early and primitive wild west film that shows mountains, snow, hunters, trappers, angry and friendly native inhabitants, buffalo and bears. Based on a two month period in the life of frontiersman Hugh Glass, the film opens up with a wild and prolonged sequence that demonstrates, in an extremely violent manner, the dangers inherent to living in that time and place.

Leonardo DiCaprio, always regarded as an actor with talent but too long seen as a Hollywood pretty boy, is receiving a lot of talk about finally grabbing an Oscar. A scraggly beard was a positive in his presentation of the hardy woodsman.

The film, though, belongs to Emmanuel Lubezki of Mexico. It is the eighth consecutive year he has been nominated for the Oscar as top cinematographer. He is the dominant player in this category and, if pictures are what the pictures are about, he is the man.
