To Be or Not to Be

A dark comedy directed by German-born Jew Ernst Lubitsch, this satire has become regarded as one of the best of its genre. Top billing in the American production was given to the delicious Carole Lombard although Jack Benny had the primary role and gave a top-notch performance as a stage actor imitating Nazi officers in Poland during the German Occupation. The movie is extremely funny at the outset, then morphs into a drama depicting the seriousness of the subject matter. Ms. Lombard, in a final tragic event that drew the curtain on her career and her life, died in a plane crash before the film was released. She was returning home from an expedition to sell war bonds, and died along with her mother, fifteen servicemen and five others.
