Before this movie, I didn't think McConaughey was anything special as an actor. This movie entirely changed my mind and perhaps forever. He is Ron Woodroof literally. I don't think anyone could have done it better. In this movie, he just rules over everybody else and in no small way. I didn't think Leto's character was as real. It's more of a stereotype, a caricature. A little subtlety could have gone a long way but he's still quite good and funny too. I was disappointed in Jennifer Garner. She seems emotionally distant throughout the movie as if she doesn't really inhabit her character. The scene where she cries over the death of Rayon (Leto) is kind of pathetic. It painfully reminded me of a famous failed scene in Reign Over Me where Adam Sandler breaks down and cries. All in all I found the movie well done, very entertaining and even educational. It shows that you don't need a big budget and endless special effects to make a good movie. It just takes smarts and Jean-Marc Vallée has smarts and artistic talent as well. Mr. McConaughey deserves this year's best actor at the Oscar's. I never thought I would ever write this!
