I was riveted, but I will say... decide carefully if you want to be subjected to a depressing look at corruption and hopelessness in today's Russian society. The bleakness of the photography, the hopelessness of the story is not for those who look for entertainment in film. It is a long hard look at a man who cannot escape or find true allies to fight the corruption and injustice through the courts, friendship or the church. At times this movie is a little too blatantly didactic --as when the Priest preaches. So, this reflects the ideals of those that fought in the Russian Revolution? Or is it just a sad commentary on humanity? It is a good movie, but for me this exploration is too sad and negative. I get a lot of that on the daily news... I gave it a 7 because it is a "snapshot" of Russian society (drinking and all) done very well. Not recommended unless you're ready for a long, sad, pessimistic downer film.
