What an unconventional Western movie! What a multi-dimensional movie! What a surprising social study! This movie is full of oppositions: the Quest for the West vs the Return to the East, the dreams of the settlers owning their land vs the harsh reality of the prairie winters, jungle law vs puritanism, and of building a life vs losing it. It is also a story about the place of women in the patriarchal society of the 19th century and the inequities intelligent, strong-willed and unwedded women would face from their peers, men and women alike. This is a haunting movie. It stays with you for several days. Incredible cast. Very credible story. I strongly recommend to people who liked No Country for Old Men or Unforgiven to see that movie.

I like your review. I haven't quite figured it out yet. We must go deeper. Tommy Lee Jones left us a shovel out in the prairie to dig deeper... lol.
