If you've heard the expression "The stuff that dreams are made of" but don't know its source, Bogey will tell you about it here. This is the quintessential Humphrey Bogart tough guy film. Without him there's no movie, and he does a grand job. The term 'film noir' is treated with utmost respect as well. I don't recall a single frame where the sun was shining. The cast was also at their best. The affable Sidney Greenstreet, always brilliant Peter Lorre, everybody's fall guy Elisha Cook Jr. and the beautiful Mary Astor were characters that could only come out of a novelist's fertile mind. I didn't totally buy into Ms. Astor's characterization but that may be subjective rather than objective. John Huston, in my opinion, is amongst the top half dozen American directors and the plot originated in a novel by one of America's most popular mystery writers, Dashiell Hammett.
