I liked Vicky Christina Barcelona but I also have reservations about it too. The story elements are fantastic, I loved the setting, the characters, the conflicts both between and internal and the performances coming from all the actors especially Rebecca Hall. I generally don't appreciate pictures that use a narrator to advance plot, it seems like a cheap device to replace the work of writing, directing and editing. That said, this film still works and works pretty well. The use of narration allows Mr. Allan to create a plot where one would not exist and to either add twists or to gloss over potential problems in story. The narration bridges between some really interesting scenes that focus on favorite Woody Allan themes such as love and infidelity. Mr. Allan seems to love making pictures in Europe and Europe seems to have given him a new lease on life. I hope he makes more European pictures, perhaps Italy should be next.
