La jeunesse américaine s'est donné rendez-vous à 160 kilomètres de Manhattan le 15 août 1969. Le concert monstre qui réunit près d'un demi-million de personnes se transforme en une vaste manifestation contre la guerre du Vietnam quand Jimi Hendrix bondit sur scène pour entamer Star Spangled Banner (sa propre version de l'hymne national américain). Avec The Who, Sha-Na-Na, Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone... À noter que Martin Scorsese fut assistant à la réalisation et il a participé au montage final.
