'Pane e cioccolata' is a 1974 Italian comedy which chronicles the misadventures of an Italian immigrant working as a waiter in Switzerland. This was a very common event of the 60's and 70's: persons from central or southern Italy moving to Northern Italy or another European nation for a better life. At the time this genre of film was called 'commedia all'italiana'. Nino Manfredi is so perfectly cast in this role which made him an international sensation. His adventures and misadventures in his new found country can be very hilarious or even a trifle tragic in a Chaplinesque kind of manner. The film is rooted in social commentary
but the comedic value of the film cannot be underestimated as director Brusati creates a marvellous feature full of great performances, appropriate music and dynamic themes that any immigrant would experience. The audience cannot but love the character of Nino, a truly understated hero. The conclusion is most satisfying as the hero determines, despite all obstacles, to continue to fight for a better life. It won the Berlin Prize in 1974 and later received the New York Film Critics Circle Award as Best foreign film. DO TRY AND SEE THIS OUTSTANDING FEATURE!
