A fairy tale requires first that you suspend disbelief and leave cynicism at the door. This is an opulent, gorgeous fantasy and an escapist treasure. The main character embodies virtue, the prince is a cartoon hero, and the supporting players enthusiastic contributors to the overall production. The interplay between characters crackles with chemistry and genuine affection. The magic conducted is spectacular, breathtaking and joyous. Rare is it to find a film containing adult themes that avoids making offense. Cinderella is entirely free of coarseness; even the wicked stepmother's performance is mostly nuance rather than outright menace. Somehow Kenneth Brannagh manages to capture her humanity as well. Helena Bonham-Carter and Derek Jacoby give the project legitimacy by providing humour and pathos. A dreamy, wonderful film for romantics. Sublime date movie. Recommended.
