Warner De Santis, a cosmologist obsessed with hearing God back in time - at the "Origin of the Universe" - gets fired from NASA, loses his wife, and flees to the Mojave Desert where he crashes his car and remains until it's fixed. There, he gets involved with the life of the town, including mounting a musical theatre piece at Rose's Café/Gas Station/German-American Emporium/Opera House. After speaking with a particular Native American of the town, Warner begins to encounter persons that might be normal, or might be "spirit messengers." Taking their words literally as instructions, he goes on a mission to find what locals say is the "Place of Origin." In the end, Warner finds in the ordinary world, close at hand, the spiritual meaning that escaped his reaching into the distance of space and time.
