History is doomed to repeat itself. The first time it's a tragedy, the second it's a farce. That is one of the opening speeches that the history professor speaks to his class. This movie is full of such hints as to the message that it wishes to communicate to its audience. Isn't that what film is? An art form of communication through a visual and audio medium? Herein lies the problem. Hollywood is very very formulaic in how it chooses to use that medium. Enemy presents itself as a crafty hollywood thriller but then stretches the boundaries of the formula way beyond the purpose of an ordinary thriller. It doesn't offer the ending you expect and the purpose of the movie is not in solving the riddle it presents. The riddle is in fact a vehicle got the message. The message is in fact that both characters could in fact be the two sides of the same person. In fact he goes as far as to insinuate that they are [identical] twins, as perfect a copy of each other (genetically speaking) as biology can allow. So what makes one a history teacher and another an actor? The choices they make. Like in a spider's web where two trajectories originating from a single point can lead to far and away different paths, so can the choices you make in your life. That is the symbolism of the spider explained, one that recurs frequently throughout. So before expecting what you expect, embrace what the director offers, something more than entertainment. An idea to empower you in your life. At least that's how I took to it.
