I absolutely adored this film. I loved the "old-fashioned" feel of it - the colours, the music, the unexpected romantic angle. Performances are excellent all around. Julianne Moore is such an expressive actress, able to convey great emotion with a single look. Dennis Quaid is also top-notch, playing a tortured soul. Characters and plot develop slowly, but that in no way makes the movie boring. Rather, it pulls the audience in, as we come to know and care about all the players. Some may dislike the ambiguous ending but I prefer it that way. Not every film has to finish with a neatly tied bow - now that would be boring.
