The pacing of this film is deliberately slow & plodding. It feels like the main characters are walking through "Thick Air". It's done so skillfully that you don't even realize how deeply you have been drawn in to each scene. The performances by Tatum, Carell & Ruffalo was nothing short of brilliant. The prosthetics were done very well, from Tatum's cauliflower ear to his broken nose, & Carell's beak like eagle nose. Tatum & Carrel played two emotionally damaged people who were drawn to each other out of a desperate need for approval & nurturing. Men in physical form, but inside the exterior they were two little boys filled with hurt & anger. Vanessa Redgrave as Carell's disapproving & unloving mother had great power & depth. Unfortunately her time on screen was all too short... This is a remarkable film & deserving of Oscar nods for all three actors.

In fact, John Du Pont had so many issues, they basically paid him off so as not to be involved of any of the day to day running of the businesses.
