"Hairspray" has a lot of energy, great songs and the casting is excellent. Nikki Blonsky really shines as Amber but everyone (even John Travolta as Amber's mother) is perfectly cast. The dance numbers are fun, though at times edited too frequently for us to really appreciate them. It also has a nice message that's been simplified (perhaps a bit too much at times) for younger audiences to enjoy and understand. It's got glimpses of a more serious subject in the story, but mostly it’s a light musical so children and adults alike will definitively have a good time. While I kind of wanted the simplified message to be developed more, it is an important one to show, especially to children who would not have heard of it before. (On Dvd, August 24, 2012)
