Okay, taken separately, all the parts of this movie are good- the singing, the cinematography, the special effects, the acting, the costumes- BUT, taken together, it is one endless, tedious, vacuous movie musical. Now I usually like musicals, but the opening number "Into the Woods" recycles monotonously as the all the major characters actually go into the woods and the only release is to recognize individual actors- "Oh, that's Tracey Ullman", "Oh, there's Christine Baranski", "Oh, Emily Blunt is singing well. Isn't she." and "That voice doesn't sound like Meryl Streep's at all; I wonder if she'll get the Oscar for Best Supporting". By the time we get to "And they all lived ever after", and then they don't, does anyone really care? At least with the Sound of Music, you can sing along. The highlight of the movie for me was finding out that the giant's wife was played by Frances de La Tour (of Harry Potter and Hagrid's ladyfriend fame) but then after about 2 minutes intermittent screen time, she was killed off. Which is what I felt like after being trapped in my seat for so long.
