Mr. Turner (J.M.W. Turner * 1775-1851) is a large slice in the life of the great painter who had legions of fans, but obviously even more gentry who were none too fond of him. It's unfortunate he developed this reputation for he was a great painter plus a member of the Academy of Arts. With this information at hand the great Mike Leigh creates a film which is a critical imagination, a loving and unsentimental portrait of a man who possessed a rather sensitive soul which did not stop him from any and every thing good or bad he wanted to do. The film celebrates his glorious art, of course, but goes one step further in revealing an entire century of art history... well you will have to make up your own mind as to the controversial nature of this enormous debate. I leave you with a clue! Think of the great RUSKIN!
