Tough-guy director Sam Fuller maps the origins of the contemporary American press in this early masterpiece. The story follows the efforts of an idealistic newspaper editor (Gene Evans) who joins forces with an equally optimistic printer to start their own paper, The Globe, in the late 1880s. A circulation war ensues with the attractive and feisty owner of his rival publication, The Star, and each of the proprietors test the other's desire to reach the number one sales position. The real star of the show is Fuller, whose to-the-point shooting style etches every shot in the viewer's mind.
