This so-called romantic drama is generally considered one of the best films of the 1960's by many. It has much going for it such as quirky camerawork, clever use of editing, engaging use of San Francisco backdrops and an intimate compelling story line. One could say that the performances are fairly strong as well. The problem is that I don't like Richard Lester films such as his earlier The Knack or how to get it. With Petulia, I was done with his style of film making after seeing Petulia. And I hated the role of Richard Chamberlain, certainly a very unflattering one, one who is weak-willed, a wife beater and possibly a pederast.
