Sally Field is superb as she walks away with her second Oscar for playing Edna Spalding, a poor woman beset by never ending problems in the Texas of the 1930's depression. Screenwriter and director Robert Benton based a a good deal of the plotline from his own boyhood. The script is smart and accurate and his direction meticulous. The amazing supporting cast adds enormously to the wealth of the film.
