After watching this several times, my initial distaste has given way to some real appreciation for some beautifully filmed scenes. At first viewing I felt nothing could compare to the 1995 A&E version.
Overall the film feels rushed. But the scenes where they do stop and take their time, are beautifully done. Those scenes have the camera telling us the story with music. Brenda Blethyn is wonderful as Mrs. Bennett. Otherwise I found the acting stilted and overall the casting is disappointing. Keira Knightley can act but should have put on weight for this role. Beauty, wealth and health was represented by the voluptuous healthy woman with 'birthing' hips, who were more likely to survive and have several children because so few survived the many diseases prevalent at that time. Kiera's skinny persona reflective of modern day beauty standards makes no sense in this context. Bref, if you're in a rush watch this, there are some worthwhile snippets of magic. Otherwise take your time to watch Jennifer Elhe and Colin Firth, that version is outstanding and is what made Colin a household name.
