Sophie Chang is an actress in New York City. You've probably never heard of her. Her latest role on TV is an illegal immigrant massage parlor worker. Facing life's mounting indignities and her own poor life decisions, she moves back in with her parents in the suburbs of Detroit. She plans to make her stay in Michigan brief: just long enough to save money to move back to New York, but she starts to reconsider everything after she runs into her high school crush and takes over a community theater production of Gilbert & Sullivan's opera "The Mikado" when the director unexpectedly quits. Tasked with trying to save the theater from being closed by the city council, Sophie has to muster everything she can to turn the eclectic group of small town nobodies into stars and become the person she was always meant to be.
