Silence is a tough movie to watch. It details the struggle of two Jesuit missionaries in hostile Japan as they search for a fellow priest who has reportedly renounced the faith. Much suffering and torture await them and their loyal Japanese followers, which is the main reason why Martin Scorsese's passion project is so difficult to watch. But for those who can stomach it, there are plenty of rewards to be had. Sumptuous visuals, strong performances from Garfield, Driver and Neeson, and of course, the sure and steady hand of Scorsese, who was clearly deeply invested in the film. At over 2hrs & 30 minutes, some might find it overlong, I didn't. I found it mostly captivating, and a deeply moving exploration of the boundaries and strength of faith when put to the ultimate test. Not an easy ride, but well worth the effort, even for someone non religious like myself.
