I give this movie a 3 because I was frustrated by the egregiously squandered potential. This was a unidimensional film which relied almost entirely on previously established symbols and the mythology of the star trek franchise. It contributed very little of its own and anything seemingly new or different only felt like a detraction from the original genius that is Star Trek. The writers really should have tried to develop something that could have stood on its own. I was particularly bothered by how flat and bland the characters were which was made especially apparent by their obvious and weak attempts at impersonating the existing personas of Spock, Kirk and the rest. For example the McCoy character was based on absolutely nothing more than the usual one liners for which he is famous. If I wanted to listen to McCoy use the same one liners ("your vulcan brain"," unbelievable!", etc.) I would just watch the original movies.
