This is the kind of film that is sure to add fuel to the black lives matter movement. Though the civil war may have ended slavery, black people continued to endure many hardships at the hands of racists, including the government itself. This, of course, lasted for decades and might still be happening, some might argue, to this day. The Free State of Jones isn't entirely about helping the slaves. It's also about the plight of poor white farmers who were being heavily taxed and even terrorized by confederate forces. It's a little uneven at times, jumping ahead many years to a trial that has very little to do with the bulk of the film. Still, it's a interesting chapter in american history, one that I was unaware of.
