I've never read the graphic novel and came to The Watchmen without any real prior knowledge of the plot or characters. Nevertheless I thought it was a brilliant movie and enjoyed it thoroughly. The acting and characterization, the art design and the plot and storyline, as complex and digressive as it was, had me completely involved and fascinated all the way through. Despite the movie's length, I was entertained all the way through... it never felt to me like a two-and-a-half hour movie. I could quibble about some things... some of the character development was thin and some roles didn't seem very well cast. The ending seemed a bit hurried and perfunctory after a huge buildup. Add to this that I never much care for well-known pop songs as part of a movie soundtrack (unless they used as a specific historic or era reference) But all this is minor. While Watchmen doesn't quite equal The Dark Knight as a definitive superhero movie, it is a spectacular epic in its own right. I'll see it again, as well as read the book and get the video. Lots of people may not 'get it', but it sure 'got' me.
