Sorry, I can't give this one any more than 6/10. It was way too predictable, and way too unrealistic. That being said, Joaquin Phoenix does deliver a great performance. But at some point, you have to wonder how much of his druggy character is actually acting. I've seen him do interview in that exact state way too often. He does carry the film, no doubt about that. Mark Wahlberg is good, but surprisingly not as present in this movie as I would have thought. And Robert Duvall is quintessential Robert Duvall, as he is in most of his movies. From the trailer, there isn't much surprise in the movie, except maybe for who end up in the hospital (depending on the trailer you saw) Besides that, you pretty much know what the basic story is from start to finish from the trailer. So no surprise there. However, there are so many holes in the storyline that is often rings untrue. I will spare you the spoilers, but too often, I found myself thinking "that just would happen that way", or even "there is no way he would be able to do that given the circumstances". I'm a huge fan of tight storylines, plausible events, and this movie fails on both accounts. 6/10 because Joaquin deliver another solid performance, regardless of if he was actually acting or not. He's good. The movie isn't.
