    American Splendor

A sometimes humorous character study of morose underground comic book creator Harvey Pekar. The drab city of Cleveland is the setting for this life story of a man who created and wrote comic books that chronicled his observations and insights of everyday life. Through this film one gets a sense that Pekar's depressing environment greatly influenced his manic outlook and behavior. Pekar gained mainstream notoriety with his mocking appearances on the Late Night with David Letterman show. While this notoriety did not lead directly to personal riches, Pekar was ultimately able to take these unsettling events and other personal tragedies in his life and produce artifacts of cultural value out of them, including this film. If you can't imagine reading and enjoying one of Pekar's comic books, I doubt if you will enjoy this movie and see its significance.
