Bergman has put together a fictional TV show that is equalled only by his brilliant Scenes from a Marriage. A wise and wealthy matriarch (aq la the Godfather) is the moral leader of her extended family. Their adversary in this conflicted drama is the local bishop who justifies his inhospitable and cruel manner through his belief in what is God's way. Bergman has contrasted the opulent and friendly of the matriarch to the cold, austere surroundings of the Bishop's residence. Contrasting Alexander's belief in God to the Bishop's, one wonders if either of them are right.
