'Once Upon a Time'... the phrase tells you that you're about to enter the world of fantasy. In this case, the extension of fantasy, 'fantastic', truly applies. An exciting dark venture for kids, with magical actions throughout the film. Also a fine moral tale. Director Cocteau, primarily a painter and contemporary of Picasso, required only a minimum of sets to weave his spell. The original story (early 1700's? ) has been converted into almost every method of artistic presentation available and continues to be revived: stage dramas, musicals, many movies, TV, ballet, opera etc.
