It would have been easy to fall into melodrama in this movie. People have lost so much during the occupation by the Nazis in many countries. Austria is just another example of this horror. Yes, Adele, the woman in gold, might have had something with Klimt even though married to Maria’s uncle, yes this family lost all their earthly wealth, yes Maria Altmann got a lot of money in settlement for this cause and yes the Randy Schoenberg made a name for himself with this cause but this is not the focus that was chosen by the director. He chose the road to sincerity in redemption, not only restitution and justice, because it is not always the material things lost that matter but the loss of memories associated with them that hurt the most. Mirren and Reynolds do a great job. Those who liked Philomena will also like this movie.
