    Ace in the Hole

Director Billy Wilder's name belongs on the pantheon of cinematic directors for filmdom's first century. Although a shade below his genius presentation of films such as 'Sunset Boulevard' and 'Some Like It Hot', his scathing personal views hold sway in this extreme look at both the public and press in the wake of potential personal tragedy. Kirk Douglas dominates the screen as a self-centred news reporter and Wilder's use of extra actors in a desert landscape, totally barren at times and over-run by the curious at other times, gives the film a heart-stopping sense of 'now'. Just prior to release, the studio changed the movie's title to 'The Big Carnival'.
