This is one of those movies that people label as "artistic" so those of us who simply don't enjoy it are made to feel that we are lacking in our ability to appreciate creativity. I missed quite a bit of dialogue which is difficult to understand. There are gaps in the storyline - elements that are dropped and left unexplained. The story is not as described. This is not about a young black man "rising above" his environment and difficult childhood at all! The ending makes it clear. And such long, long pauses in the dialogue. The only reason to see it is because the Oscars need to nominate someone black and perhaps the choices are limited this year.

I too was bored out of my face... I don't get the response to this one either, and I like "artistic" films.
