Aside from being necessarily long, this film is easy to watch if you're familiar with typical U. S. anti-ethnic history. The Europeans and the "Americans" created the very problem that we have today regarding racial intolerance and is another reason we don't want to see a Trump in office. The past is littered with evidence of the rich few trying to protect their empires at the cost of the many and have created the problem that they face from their own greed. They bought and sold blacks, then slowly agreed to free them and yet they are still not a truly free people in the country of their birth. This movie exemplifies the sadness of the demise of their own making. The actors in ALL counts were wonderful, not just M. M. Gugu Mbatha-Raw should be considered for best supporting actress. M. M. was good too but not that outstanding. Just because he had the lead role doesn't automatically demand an "Oscar". His "Angry Eyes" look was seriously overdone with the warpaint (make-up) to try to emphasize it. The movie played out a little bit like a Robin Hood and left the audience in a lull with all of the wasted time in the swamp. All in all, though, this is still a great film but hard to watch a second time I'm sure due to the grief and depressing theme and length. Would be hard to commit to sitting through this again and enduring that on a "movie night" at home. Probably won't pick this one up at the store.
