A somewhat bland tale of a down-and-out book author who tries to capitalize on America’s fascination with Howard Hughes by claiming to be working with the recluse billionaire on his autobiography. The story did not intrigue me as much as it should have and this may be due to a weak script or poor film editing. Either way, I felt the picture fell short of what it could have been. The performances are pretty good but I felt the films treatment of the main character - author Clifford Irving - to be as mystifying as that of the subject of the film, Howard Hughes himself. In the end both characters remain enigmas.
