Kaufman's latest feels like an episode right out of his grander "Synecdoche". Therein lies its greatest weakness and strength. For in re-treading familiar territory "Anomalisa" manages to feel far more minor than it's forebear, but still stands tall as a serious drama about life and meaning. It's funny, incredibly sad and features squeam-inducing moments of awkward social interaction that feel ripped from real life. Not an ideal date movie, unless you want to question everything you want from the other person and vice-versa.
